Cricket

During the last six years Hawk-Eye has developed strong relationships with the coaching staff of all the major cricket nations, with the likes of England, Australia, South Africa, and India all using Hawk-Eye data. Through continual interaction with the finest minds in World Cricket Hawk-Eye has been able to refine its technology, producing a system that stands alone as being the most complete cricket coaching system available on the market today.

We are committed to providing the very best facilities at 'The Home of Cricket', and making them as widely available as possible.  The MCC Indoor School has undergone major refurbishment over the past two years, and the installation of Hawk-Eye in the Performance Analysis Suite is the latest stage of this development.  I am delighted that Lord’s has become the first venue where members of the public may experience Hawk-Eye, and I am sure it will prove very popular with the many users of the MCC Indoor School.

John Stephenson, Head of Cricket at the MCC

The Hawk-Eye coaching system comprises of two main elements: a tracking system to track all balls bowled in the Hawk-Eye net and a video replay system.

Tracking System

High speed vision processing cameras track the ball from the bowler’s hand to the batsman. The system will automatically calculate the following information:

  • The speed of the ball leaving the bowler's hand
  • The reaction time for the batsman.
  • The swing on the ball from the bowler's hand to where the ball pitched
  • Where the ball pitched
  • Where the ball was bowled from
  • How much the ball bounced
  • How much the ball deviated sideways off the wicket (i.e. seam or spin)
  • A prediction of where the ball would have passed the stumps

All of this information can be stored in a database. A simple user interface can be provided so that a non-technical person can interrogate the information in a number of different ways, with the data being displayed graphically.

Video Replay System

Whilst the tracking data provides the coaches and players with the information for HOW they have performed, it only partly answers the question of WHY. The Hawk-Eye Cricket System can incorporate more video replay cameras for better bio-mechanical analysis from different camera angles, which can be controlled remotely from a central Analysis Suite. The video is captured and stored digitally on hard disks and in the Video Archive.

The Hawk-Eye Cricket System can also incorporate Interactive Video Replay Touch Screen monitors in the high performance area so athletes can review their performance in situ, wireless networks for access outside the centre, high speed cameras for biomechanical analysis and a whole host of other special features. Each system is designed to fit the individual needs of a particular coaching facility; incorpoating spatial and architectural requirements to design a system unique to the specifications and budget of our clients.

Full, comprehensive training and technical support is also included in our packages, so customers can get the very best from Hawk-Eye’s technology. Furthermore, Hawk-Eye listens to feedback from existing and new clients to make constant improvements to its software and hardware, thus remaining at the cutting edge of coaching innovations.
